Lazy but totally on time Friday

So been away on a small holiday, so I haven't had the chance to do any digital art. I have however been doing a lot of sketching in my two sketchbooks. I have been carrying my A6 sketchbook on me at all times, to draw studies of animals and interesting things I see around the place. I have then used my A5 sketchbook when I'm more relaxed sitting around in the mornings or at night where i have more time to draw more illustrative stuff. So yup, been drawing but unfortunately nothing to impressive to show.

Eight

"Eight" ...Or perhaps Eleven

Inspired by Art Nouveau -a movement that brought with it some very beautiful work.
An experiment with warmer tones.

Akaroaaaa

Art comes in many forms, thank you very much.

I enjoyed a lovely boat ride around Duvauchelle/Akaroa in the weekend. Was a beautiful day for it. While we work hard to create neat pieces of art, sometimes it's nice to step out and take a look at what is already there.

See you next week, turtles!

... Ack it's hard following Mai's post with something equally as interesting. One day!

Titles are hard - Monday

As unimaginative it can be.  I do like head shots, and constantly struggling to achieve symmetry, despite flipping it to check.....orz.

2%Bull 98%Man

Sooooooo I did that cat girl painting awhile ago and thought I might even the field a little. I haven't painted or really drawn too many muscly guys before so sorry about any weird details. It was fun though searching through references of chiseled guys and thinking more about showing the muscles. Also like the cat girl not a whole lot of though went into him and he was just kinda created randomly. I was also meant to post some studies I did today, but i accidentally somehow cut my painting in half. I then went to hit save as to try reopen the old version and accidentally hit save..... was a good afternoon.

Scrapheap Treasure

Scrapheap Treasure
A ray of hope in a desolate wasteland.

I've actually had the loose idea for this piece in my head for a while. I decided to go for a starker art style here, with more solid black shadows -I feel that it suits the grim atmosphere.

Sketchbook Sketches

So I decided to make a little sketchbook compilation this week, A lot of these sketches were done well out at places, parks, friends houses and well out eating lunch, so they are very brief sketchs. The top sketches are of the one of the other memebers of the neon turtles flat and bits and pieces. The 2 rows of sketches in the middle are of just random characters I drew well doing things over the past few weeks and The most recent ones are the set of 3 pages down the bottom. I did them yesterday down at the riccarton bush where I went for a small walk and talked to the ducks.

Endless

A couple of line art drawings. Been reading Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novel series lately --absolutely brilliant stuff, by the way (highly recommended). Hence the fan artwork;

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream...
'Dream' © DC Comics
The Dream character is fascinating, such a powerful design.

"And what do you think you're doing?"
'Death' © DC Comics, 'Misa Amane' © Shueisha Inc.
And a crossover with Death Note.

A little fan art is a very good thing, I think. Taking the time to acknowledge your interests and/or artistic role models is a worthwhile exercise indeed.

W.I.P Friday

JET SET RADIOOOO!
So this would be the first piece of fan art that I've really worked on seriously. I usually don't get into fan art much, but Jet Set Radio is a game that has influenced my art a lot. So I find it kinda fitting that I did something orientated around that game for my first piece of actual fan art. For people who don't know the game check out the trailer for its re-release here. The piece itself still has a decent amount of work to be done on it, but the general stuff is down. Once It's all finished up ill post the final thing up here (Hopefully that will be soon)

Plagiarism Thursday

I like comics, I hope to draw a long form comic eventually.

So.... here's something I do sometimes, which is; to copy comic pages that I really like.
I like to try and figure out what I like about the page, usually it's the panel layout.

I usually wouldn't show anyone these drawings, because it's basically pure plagiarism, and also, just an exercise.

But I'm a turtle now, so;

Here are two pages I have stolen from the English language translation of Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Specifically Volume 6. Pages 93 and 94.

I've copied the panel layout, the body positions, even most of the location geometry.
All I've changed are the characters and the dialogue.

I really like Otomo's shot choices in these pages, especially the shots around the window, and the way the action plays out, it's visually, very easy to follow and satisfying to read.

Anyhow, that's my drawing for this week.

Next week, something I haven't stolen.

Fly!

Another experimentation in bright, colourful, lighthearted illustration (as my previous 'Lady Luck' piece). This time, I've illustrated something of a retro pop culture pastiche, mostly influenced by the 1990s (with shades of the 80s in there for good measure ...for some reason).

I was definitely going for a slightly 'old school' throwback feel here. It just seems as though everything was just so much more colourful back then!

Channelle's PokePost

Hello humans!

So I found myself for some reason challenging a student in my ESOL class (where I'm the teacher, incidentally) to draw 14 Pokemon a week.

I tried to get the poses to be somewhat original, although that kakuna and metapod... yep. Hard to get creative with those two.

I also am having a go at colouring with copics! Because copics are fun, and exciting, and I am buying 12 more so I might as well try get into using these creatures with having invested some money into the things.

Well, enjoy some bright, happy Pokemon! Have a good week!!!

Been hectic week last week, so technically mayhem was last week.

Caturday Eve

Meow!

So someone told me it was a good idea to stop thinking and just draw something fun... and this is what i ended up with. Its not the most exciting of illustrations, but when drawing for fun I just like to think about design and not so much about anything else. Looking at what I ended up with here it shows that I'm still heavily influenced by the same artists I started out studying years ago. With this painting you can really see the link with the art seen on xa-xa-xa's deviant art page and my own ( mainly in the hips ). He does a lot of the art for a game called wakfu which has heavily influenced a lot of my art and its style. So yeah, cat girls... good stuff

Sketchbook, On Location - Continued

More Sketches from my notebook.

Something I like doing is:
I draw panels at random on a page,
then wander around finding interesting things
and compositions to draw into the boxes.
It produces a kind of location montage mini-comic.

Next Post, I'll have a short comic narrative for you to read.

Mischief

Mischief by Jed Uy
In the dark, some things may appear much more fearsome and menacing than they really are.

This is Halloween! Err, well not quite -but I finally jumped aboard the Tim Burton bandwagon, perhaps inspiring this artwork in no small part! Nightmare Before Christmas specifically, is what did the trick.

After focusing on mostly illustrative, lineart-based drawings, it was nice to do some good old digital painting once again.
