Choc/Malt Flavour!

MILOOOO!! Milo is an incredibly, incredibly cute bird. Such a dear. Don't ask me the gender, because Bengalese finches are really difficult to know the gender of.

Anyway, check it! Photoshop painty paint of one of my lovely birds in kind of dramatic lighting. Took about an hour and a half, and I had a lot of guidance from Johannes

OKAY I HAVE TO GO TO WORK NOW. BYEEEE! AND TAKE THAT, TURTLES!

Monday Monster

Base colours.  Ever since seeing Fuzichoco's live painting session at Overload last year, I'd been using mauve in the shadow.
You can find a lot of her making videos on her facebook page.

Futuristic Friday

So over the past week I've been doing a whole bunch of studies, you can see my last two days of studies here. Other than that though I've been touching up some old work, including the one above called Future Red.

So this is an original piece I started awhile ago and am still semi going back to every so often. This paintings contents were mainly inspired by the game Jet Set Radio, personally one of my favourite games ever. I mainly looked at the colourful futuristic setting found in the game and adapted little red riding hood into a similar style. I'm pretty happy with the end result, but next time I think I would like to go into her bodysuits visual design a bit more.

Sketchbook, On Location

I like to walk around in the underbrush, it's fresh air, it's exercise and you can find cool things to draw.
I like to draw straight with my pen, fill up a notebook page, then move on.

I recommend buying a sketchbook and getting out into the wilderness yourself.

Crimson Talon

Crimson Talon by Jed Uy
Wielding the 'Crimson Talon', the prince adorned in bird-like armour defies the stars.

Paint Tool SAI is a fantastic piece of software that I have recently adopted. It really does allow for some slick linework, something that I experimented with for this particular artwork.

Stylistically, I was inspired by the beautiful, ornate fantasy illustration of Yoshitaka Amano and Tomomi Kobayashi -two brilliant artists. The prince exhibits some more elaborately-designed armour than I might usually draw, and an overall more fey appearance.

In terms of other influences, his outfit also has shades of an avian motif (peacock feathers, swan-like pauldrons, etc), but I also drew a little inspiration from several kinds of teapot of all things(!)

Leaping onto Tuesday!

Uguu?

Haha sorry, sorry. Shazzaam!

I wish I could say I was going for some kind of decent meaningful thing with this piece, but honestly, this was just a fun, shallow print for me to make. I just wanted to make something cute and happy and buzzing with energy! Will probably work on this more at some point, but yup! Take that!

Samurai Soul Start

Starting on Samurai Soul.  Reference piece of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (master of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints).
Only recently started playing with watercolour this year.  So it's trial and error.  Decided to mask out areas. just in case.  The masking fluid I bought is Schminke.  It's transparent, so kinda hard to see, as opposed to yellow masking fluid.  Once dry, I put earthy light tone in background to replicate old paper colour.

Johannes Friday

Blue and orange contrast too g

Yo, so I'm Johannes and Friday is when you will be seeing me post. I'm a freelance graphic designer mainly but am slowly branching into illustration and concept art as I improve my skills there.I mainly just draw whatever interests me and that changes approximately every few hours so you can expect a decent range of art from me every Friday.

My favourite artists include BluefleyJen zey and Xa Xa Xa, I think there influences are pretty apparent in my work so far. I work pretty much fully digitally but I do sketch in my sketchbook when I am away from my computer or when doing studies.

You can check out my work at my blog and learn a bit more about me on my profile page .

Hi.

My name is Thomas and I'm the turtle for Thursday.

I like to draw comics, make short films and animate a little.

I draw mainly with pen and paper, and do my post-production digitally.

I like to keep a notebook handy, usually in the inside pocket of my jacket.

Artists I enjoy include: Craig Thompson, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Alex Toth,
David Mazzucchelli, Darwyn Cooke, Edward Hopper, Goseki Kojima and Mitsuru Adachi.

Thomas Hardy, Patricia Highsmith, Jerry Seinfeld and J.D. Salinger.

I look forward to posting art, short comics and stories for your enjoyment.

Hopefully by creating work every week, I can level up my skills and also
experiment with new illustrative and story-telling techniques.

See you next week.

Jed's Wednesday Intro

Hey! Jed here, posting on Wednesdays.

I am currently working as a freelance illustrator and multimedia artist. My preference is towards digital art, though I am no stranger to traditional media.

Among my favourite artists are; Shinkiro, Ayami Kojima, Juno Jeong, Saskia Gutekunst, Wes Burt... Ah, to list everybody would be an endless exercise, but you get the idea! Stylised 2d illustration and concept art are the name of the game.
As well as illustration and traditional visual art, I also have quite an interest in film and gaming.

I look forward to sharing more of my artwork with you soon!

Channelle and Tuesday!

Yo!

Yes, well, I'm Channelle. The, uh, least experienced and least qualified artist here in the turtle hizzouse virtual internet home. I'm actually an English teacher. Woo!

As you can probably see, I like manga-style art, but then, I'm experimenting a lot, so I'm expecting my style to change considerably over the next.. uh, while. I like playing with pencil work and digital work. I also sometimes make fan plushies, if time and the inclination are present. I take inspiration from artist friends in real life and deviantART, and not so much from famous artists for some reason.

YEP. WELL. Give me your patience and encouragement, and I will do my best to keep up with these crazy turtles.

Channelle, over and out. And seriously, Jed, if you dare do something super cool for your post, oh man, not gonna be impressed... it's hard enough having to follow after Mai's excellent first post. OTL Don't give up, Channelle. Don't give up! You can do it!! Yessss!! Totally talking to myself! Agh. Also, also, I'm going to be the cool person with the easter egg links hiding in my posts. YES

Monday Mai's Intro

Hi.  Mai here for Monday.  My favourite artists are Tsutomu Nihei, Ayumi Kasai, Takehiko Inoue, Kaneda (Colony One), Shaun Tan, and Quentin Blake. I like to work with traditional mediums, such as ink, and watercolour, sumi (charcoal), and copic markers.

Welcome to the Neon Turtles art blog

Welcome to the Neon Turtles art blog! We are an artist collective featuring the talents of Johannes Otte, Jed Uy, Channelle Carnie, Thomas Davidson and Mai Tanaka. You can look forward to introduction posts from each of the members over the coming week. We will provide more insight into our own art, and how we came to be, here in these coming posts.

Our aim with the Neon Turtles is to bring you our art in a consistent manner, and give us a way to interact and communicate with you. We want to be able to create more art that people will love, and through the Neon Turtles name we will do this. We will be posting a new piece of art every day on the blog, taking requests and uploading a variety of other media to give you a chance to get to know the artists behind the art as well. There will be plenty to look forward to from us every week.
